CANON POINT pre-Camelot mission
HISTORY: HISTORY
PERSONALITY:
Everyone knows the story of Arthur Pendragon, who pulls the sword Excalibur and lives on to become king of Britain, head of the round table of Camelot, and who died tragically at the hands of his son, Mordred. Artoria's story is not so far off in some ways, though she is a woman, even if her gender has never meant anything to her.
Artoria is often described as a servant first and foremost, both in the literal sense (as a Heroic Spirit) and in the figurative sense, as she believes herself, even as a king, to be a servant to her people and to those who request her aid. It paints the most accurate picture of who Artoria is as an individual: in life and in death, she is devoted to a cause, often that of seeing to the safety and happiness of others. Though she chases the Holy Grail doggedly, she does so with the hope of saving her kingdom of Camelot from its destruction and division. She is loyal to this cause and to people in general, seeking to cut through bloodshed and corruption and kill as few as possible in an assurance of victory. And as Artoria is a servant, she is described at times as painting herself more as a tool than as a person - a Servant and a spirit, not a living and breathing woman - at many points throughout the visual novels and anime she is a part of.
In fact, outsiders would initially paint Artoria as someone who is aloof, perhaps even detached and cold. She is the Winter King; she is someone who tries to exude strength and cohesion, definitive, firm, solemn. She does not allow herself to be seen as a person but, rather, as a symbol that must shine above others in order to unite the people. She is to bring confidence, even peace, to others. If she is seen as a person, then she is seen as someone who can be corrupted or malleable, who can bend for anyone. And that is not how Artoria wishes to be seen as. She wields the faith of the people as her strength and her armor, and when they begin to doubt, the shell of Artoria and her beautiful Camelot cracks down the center. She strives so hard to be a symbol, to be a figure beyond reproach, a servant and sword of the people, that she does not see herself as a person any longer, nor does she see herself as a ruler. Artoria, if anything, shows herself to be a "martyr for her ideals" (as Rider puts it). And as an ideal for her people, they could not live up to what she was, and so the kingdom fell once she had lost her life. In many ways, she led by example, but as an example others could not follow so perfectly.
That isn't to say that Artoria is perfect, nor should it give the impression that she is unfeeling. In fact, Artoria seems to have a soft heart for people she grows close to, and loves her people and her companions quite dearly. She is quick to righteous anger on their behalf and tries to put herself in the middle of their troubles in the hopes of keeping them safe. She is kind to those around her and does her best to pursue happiness for others, even if she does not chase it for herself. She is more content, as said before, to simply be a conduit for others to have some kind of happiness, to serve them, rather than to pursue happiness for herself. She does, however, find plenty of time to enjoy herself with life's small moments - being with Shirou and Rin, for example, or enjoying food or friendly competition, even fighting with honor - but does not outwardly pursue something pleasant in the way others might.
Artoria's will is ironclad and she refuses to budge on her ideals, on her spirit and beliefs, or regarding others. She is an honorable sort, refusing to give in to more underhanded means of winning (such as sabotage or kidnapping), which puts her at odds with those who use trickery or who lie to get their way. She clashed often with Kiritsugu in this regard, who felt that victory was worth many lives if it meant staining his own hands, because he would have a world where there would be no more suffering; Artoria, in contrast, believed there was honor in war and in victory through fairness - though that victory might cost hundreds if not thousands of lives in the interim, and again paints an image of war as something worth admiring and not abhorring.
